Between_Space

I collaborated with Keith Hartwig to create the Between Space play environment.  This play space is composed of rigid frame over which a textile net is suspended. The support structure is constructed of laminated 4x8’ plywood vertical elements and 2x4x10’lateral members. The net is constructed with a ¼” bungee rope with the support structure.

This work challenges the dominance of traditional static building typologies by exploring the application of differential structural systems.  The Between Space Tensegrity Hammock a prototype for a pop-up interactive sculpture and play environment.  We designed and fabricated the system of tensile ropes to react to the presence of an individual within the hammock.  The hammock contracts and expands around the individual, providing them with a tactile and sensory experience of the space.  When not in use, we designed the hammock so that it would be folded and disassembled for storage.
